The University’s History

The University “Turan-Astana” is a higher education institution working under the state license series AA number 0000355 which was issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan from April 26, 2004.

With the transferal of the capital from Almaty to Astana, the University of “Turan” (Almaty) decided to establish a branch in the city of Astana which was opened on May 15, 1998.

The director of the branch of the University of “Turan” in Astana was appointed to Madeev Sabyrzhan Maratovich (“Excellent Educator of the Republic of Kazakhstan”). He won the contest “Teacher of the Year – 93” in the city of Karaganda and has extensive experience in pedagogical work: his first experience was as the director of a private school in Kazakhstan, “Maher “(Karaganda); then, he was appointed to the secondary school №88 in Karaganda; next, he headed the Regional Institute of Teacher Training in Akmola—the Moscow branch of the private educational complex” Lyceum Capital” (Akmola). In September 1999, Madeev S. M, under the auspices of the 1KEH programme, traveled to USA in order to explore the educational system of the United States.

In 2004, the branch of the University “Turan” was transformed into an independent institution called the University of “Turan-Astana.” In November 2005, the Council of the founders of the Rector of the University “Turan-Astana” was appointed doctor of economic sciences, professor, and member of the philosophical and economic meeting of Moscow State University Aliev Urak Zholmurzaevich.

And, since May 2009, the Rector of the University is Zhaparova Gulzhamal Alkenovna, Ph.D., Professor.

This approach towards the education of young people makes good use of all the scientific, educational and logistical capacities of the corporation “Turan,” creates good conditions for the student to continue their education, improves his skills and attracts young people for scientific and research work.

2Three times (in 2000, 2005 and 2010), the university received the state’s certification of higher education, and in 2002, it was awarded state accreditation from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. After graduation, “Turan-Astana” graduates receive a state diploma with the assignment of an academic degree of either “Bachelor” and “Master.”

The University of “Turan-Astana” is one of the first to introduce credit technologies for the purpose of allowing flexibility and academic freedom. Training is carried out in the faculties of full-time and correspondence courses and conducted in the state and Russian languages. Starting with the first year of study, students have the opportunity to listen to the discipline of their choice. All students have free access to the Internet online.

Every year, the University is actively involved in various republican rankings held in the sphere of educational activity.

Thus, at the end of the National rating of the best universities for humanitarian and economic trends conducted by the Independent Kazakhstan Quality Assurance Agency in Education (IQAA), the University of “Turan-Astana,” among other humanitarian and economic institutions in the country in 2011, ranked 14th in 2012 and 12th place in 2013.

As a result of the general ranking of universities in Kazakhstan in 2013, the University of “Turan-Astana” was among the 60 best universities in Kazakhstan. And, according to the rating of the Center of Bologna process, as well as the academic mobility of the educational programs of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2013, 10 undergraduate majors and 8 master’s degree specialties offered by the university entered the top ten amongst similar specialties offered by other universities.

In 2012, the specialty “Socio-cultural service” ranked amongst the top three leaders in similar specialties over three years’ time.
